The oaks of the Piedmont
Most large trees in a Winston-Salem yard are oaks, and which oak it is changes almost every decision that follows. Here is how to tell them apart from the ground.
Oaks divide into two groups, and the split matters more than any individual species name. Red oaks have bristle tips on their leaf lobes, take two years to ripen an acorn, and are more susceptible to bacterial leaf scorch. White oaks have rounded lobes with no bristles, ripen acorns in a single season, and generally live longer with less internal decay. Once you know which group a tree belongs to, you already know most of what matters about its future.
Willow oak
The easiest one to identify, because it does not look like an oak at all. Willow oak has narrow, unlobed leaves like a willow, only an inch or so wide, and it makes an enormous amount of small leaf litter in the fall. It is a red oak group member, it grows quickly, and it was planted heavily as a street and yard tree across the Piedmont because it takes urban conditions well and makes a handsome round crown.
What it does at maturity is where the tree work comes from. Willow oak roots run along the top of compacted clay rather than diving into it, which is why they lift sidewalks, crack driveway edges, and surface in lawns. It also grows large enough to overhang most residential lots entirely. Being in the red oak group, it is one of the species bacterial leaf scorch shows up in.
Water oak
The problem child of Piedmont yards, and worth being able to recognise. Water oak has small leaves shaped roughly like a spatula or a duck's foot, wider at the tip than at the base, often with three shallow lobes at the end. It is semi-evergreen in mild winters, so it holds brown leaves longer than its neighbors do.
It grows fast, which is why it was planted, and it does not live as long as an oak reasonably should. Internal decay develops considerably earlier than in white oak, often starting at old limb wounds and working down the trunk. The practical consequence in a neighborhood is that water oaks planted together on one street reach the end of their comfortable life together, and a single windy spring produces limb drops across several adjoining properties. If your street has them, they are worth looking at as a group rather than one at a time.
Southern red oak
Also called Spanish oak. Leaves are deeply lobed with bristle tips and a distinctive shape: the terminal lobe is often long and narrow, sometimes curving, and the leaf base is frequently rounded like a bell. Undersides are noticeably fuzzy and paler than the top.
It is a dry-site tree, common on Piedmont ridges and in old field edges, and it is generally a well-structured oak when it has grown with space. Being in the red oak group, it appears on the list of species NC State Extension associates with scorch symptoms.
White oak
The one worth keeping. Rounded leaf lobes with no bristles, and pale, light-grey, slightly flaky bark that looks distinctly different from the darker, more furrowed bark of the red oaks around it. Growth is slower, wood is denser, and decay resistance is meaningfully better.
A mature white oak in a yard is usually the tree with the longest remaining life on the property, and where a clearing or a construction project involves choosing which trees stay, white oak is generally near the top of the list. It also responds poorly to root disturbance, so keeping it means keeping equipment and trenches away from it, not just leaving it standing.
Post oak
Distinctive once you have seen it: the leaves have a characteristic cross or Maltese-cross shape, with two large squared-off middle lobes. It is a white oak group member, a slow-growing dry-site tree, and it turns up on poor, shallow, or rocky ground where other oaks struggle.
Post oaks are notoriously intolerant of having their root zones disturbed, and a post oak that was left standing during a build frequently declines afterward for reasons that trace back to grade changes and compaction rather than to anything visible in the crown.
Bacterial leaf scorch
Worth knowing because it looks like drought and is not. Bacterial leaf scorch is caused by the bacterium Xylella fastidiosa, which blocks the water-conducting vessels in the tree. NC State Extension describes it as a serious disease of oaks, listing red oak, white oak, pin oak, and shingle oak among affected species, and notes that red oak group members are generally hit harder than white oak group members. It has been recorded in North and South Carolina on elm, pin oak, southern red oak, and sycamore among others.
The signature is timing and repetition. Symptoms appear in late July or early August as browning that begins at the leaf margin and works inward, often with a narrow yellow band between the brown and the green. It returns on the same tree every year, usually a little worse and a little earlier each season, and it typically affects one branch or one section of the crown first before spreading. Genuine drought scorch appears in dry years and not in wet ones.
There is no cure. What it changes is the planning horizon: a scorched oak is a tree on a schedule rather than a tree with a problem to fix, and the useful work is keeping deadwood out of it and deciding when replacement makes sense. Planting the replacement before the old tree comes out is the move that saves a decade of waiting.
Oak decline
A separate and broader phenomenon. NC State Extension describes oak decline as a complex of heat and drought stress that weakens trees and opens the door to secondary diseases and wood-boring insects. It is not one pathogen with one answer, which is exactly why it is difficult to treat. What it means for an individual tree is that a run of dry summers has consequences that show up years later, and that a tree already stressed by root damage is far more vulnerable to it than a healthy one on the same street.
Why the species changes the decision
Two eighty-foot oaks over the same roof are not the same problem. A white oak in good condition with sound unions is a pruning job and a tree worth investing in. A water oak of the same size with an old limb wound and a hollow starting below it is on a shorter timeline, and money spent pruning it buys fewer years. Getting the identification right first is what stops a homeowner spending removal money on a tree that had thirty good years left, or pruning money on one that had five.
